MUCH WILL FOR FILLING BIG BOOTS
*Tuomas Holopainen who is concentrated on composing receives demo post all the time although
the band hasn't even stared looking for the new vocalist actively.*
Tuomas Holopainen who has returned to his everyday routines after a weekend at his cottage receipts a package the postman has brought and browses quickly through the letters of the day. Once again a fan letter from some part of the world has found its way to his home address.
The package on the other hand is full of style samples sent by the vocalist candidates: a couple of CDs, one c-cassette and of course photographs and text. This time all the Nightwish vocalist wannabes are foreigners.
"We're looking for the new vocalist semi-actively. We get offers from all around the world and it's quite surprising how much of them we have received," Tuomas Holopainen says.
"The new singer definetely doesn't have to be a Tarja-clone. Originality is a plus. We already have one era behind us. We're in no hurry because the publishing day of the next album has not yet been agreed upon. We're not going to make the mistake that we would rush things now," he adds.
Many of the candidates according him either have a great deal of self-esteem or then they have no idea just how big are the boots they want to step into. So apparently the right one hasn't come across yet.
"When we'll find the vocalist, we will let people know. I have not bothered myself with this issue yet because I've been concentrating on the composing and lyric-writing. I have a firm belief that everything will find its course in the end.
I hope that everyone else would also remember that a band is much more than just a singer.
No intentions to get scandal publicity with the book
Even though Holopainen and the band are concentrated on creating something new, the fans do not have to settle for waiting for the new album. In the end of May will come out a book about the band, written by "the walking heavy metal dictionary" Mape Ollila who works for Spinefarm.
"This is his first book, but he has learned to know us so well during these years that we wanted him to write it. I've read it through a couple of times and I'm satisfied with it."
The book has been in process for four years and it tells the 10 years long journey of the band "as it has been".
"It's not a scandal or an exposure book. Though of course it contains stuff that has never before been public knowledge, and some people may even get offended. It will reveal our true personalities more accurately than ever before. I'm excited to see how people will react to it."
Holopainen says that while proofreading the text he has at times felt like laughing and at times felt ashamed: it has evoked many different feelings at least in him. The book will also go through "the hurly-burly in the end of the year".
"Everyone can make up their own conclusions. Nevertheless I hope that it's not the only thing that people will be interested about."
To the studio in Fall after a summer of rehearsing
According to Tuomas Holopainen the new songs have been born surprisingly easily.
"I'm really surprised how easy this has been. Music is emotion, and this time it's been channelled more easily than it usually has.
So that part looks really good. This has been carefree time.
My daily routine has become such that I wake up in the forenoon, drink some coffee, play synths for ten hours, watch some movie and go to sleep."
Even though the band is "on vacation", Holopainen also has things that keep him busy. The book, the DVD directed by Antti Jokinen that will probably come out in the fall, the continuous interview requests and the fanmail that's possibly even more
plentiful than before fill his days in addition to the composing.
"I would have had strenght to carry on even without a break, there was no exhaustion. The three weeks in the end of October and
beginning of November were more wearing than the last 1,5 years altogether.
With the other guys we have planned the schedules so that the summer is rehearsing time and to the studio we will go in September.
Before that everyone is concentrating on their own stuff.
Jukka is managing the business side of the band and spending time with his family. Emppu's in Kerava where Tero Kinnunen also moved to, by the way, and he has his own music-related projects. Marco is enjoying family life and also working on the new Tarot album if I have understood correctly.
For me the spring means -in addition to the songwriting for Nightwish- the solo album of Timo Rautiainen and the recordings of For My Pain. I've also planned a two-week holiday in USA," Holopainen sums up.
"WE WILL NOT RUSH THINGS NOW"
"This has been carefree time," says the musician Tuomas Holopainen who is enjoying the wintry countryside scenery and it is easy to believe that.
His whole presence gives off how good and relaxed he feels.
The sensation caused by the firing of the vocalist Tarja Turunen has subsided, but the publicity has nevertheless not forgotten Nightwish.
"I understand that everyone is eager to know about the new singer. There has been many candidates and we will tell when we'll find the right one. We have to choose her with very good care.
It should be remembered, though, that there is much more in a band than just a singer," Tuomas Holopainen notes.
Balsam for the self-esteem of the sensitive artist are letters and packages sent by the fans.
"I still read every letter and sometimes I feel insufficient. How can I ever thank these people? I have received some incredibly adorable stuff, like a self-made Christmas calendar from Germany," he tells.
"MOST ANNOYING THING NOW IS THE PUBLICITY"
People hashing over the sacking, the new singer and the sacking again are already starting to annoy Tuomas Holopainen.
"Right now the most annoying thing is truly the publicity. I'm a celebrity now and I don't like it. Before Tarja used to be the figurehead, and the media was most interested about her. Well, I guess this is just a part of this job," he sighs.
The band has not given out interviews to the gossip magazines but that doesn't prevent them from making articles about the Nightwish members who have now risen to the "true celebrity" status.
"In a way this has been a good school. The articles that have lately appeared in these magazines have made me ponder the ethics of media and journalism.
I think it's really strange that some people write lies about other people for living. What can such an occupation give you?
The No sori magazine by Kotiteollisuus mocks this kind of journalism wonderfully."
Many people understand Holopainen's will to protect his private life -his relationships, his home and his everyday life- from publicity because the tabloid journalism fed by the gossip rewards has been discussed a lot also among those on the profession.
It will be a great pity if "just Tuomas" who is still considered a boy-next-door among the townspeople of Kitee will someday have to reconsider a trip to a local pizza place in fear of appearing in a tabloid the next day.
