Fan Interview
1. Where does the name "Nightwish" come from? Whose idea was it to call the band Nightwish?
Tuomas: Originally it was the title of one song from our very first demo, which included 3 acoustic songs, and because of that, the demo was called "Nightwish-demo". I liked the name and thought that this name really describes what our music is all about so that's why it also became the band's name.
2. What was the worst comparison (to other bands, styles, etc.) that you ever heard about your music?
Tuomas: I wouldn't mention any "worst" comparisons because everybody has their own feelings about our music and can find all kinds of different elements from it. We have no problem with that. We've been compared to e.g. Stratovarius, Therion, The Gathering, Iron Maiden (!!??), Queen and some film music scores. The latter one I take as a compliment since I like to consider our music as strongly score-influenced, every song being a mini-soundtrack to a certain story, dream or feeling.
3. Tuomas, what was the very first song you wrote that was released on a CD?
Tuomas: Wow, this brings nostalgic memories ! I believe it was a 2- minute outro for the "Heirs Of The Northstar" -album by Darkwoods My Betrothed, released in 1994.
4. In your opinion, which is the best Nightwish-song and why?
Jukka: For me the best is (at this moment) 10th Man Down. It just works so well not only in the cd and also live. In that song there's just nothing missing but yet there's nothing too much.
Tuomas: I agree with Jukka. 10th Man Down is somewhat different song which is also great fun to play live. Maybe my all-time favourite, however, still remains to be "Dead Boy's Poem". It's very personal song for me, almost a testimony, something that just had to be done. I still get shivers of the emotion in Tarja's voice in this song.
5. Tarja, what you sing are Tuomas' feelings and thoughts. Is there any Nightwish-song that you can truly identify with?
Tarja: It is well known that I am singing Tuomas' feelings and thoughts, but still I can see myself in songs like "Wanderlust" and "Two for Tragedy". If the composer is a male, he normally writes the lyrics that everyone can see there is a man telling a story for the listener. I am a lady who is singing and only through my voice his thoughts can be told.
6. Tarja, which Nightwish-song is the most difficult one to sing on stage? Is there a song that you would never sing live?
Tarja: I have had problems with many songs in a live situation, but not so much anymore. Maybe the reason is that I have made progress as a singer and learned how to use my body in a healthy way during the concert. Still, if I need to mention a song which is hard to sing, for example "FantasMic".
7. Emppu, where do you get all your stage-energy from? Is that a natural thing for you or have you done some kind of "stage action"-training?
Emppu: It's natural thing! I'm just a happy, funny guitarplayer!
8. Tarja, where do you get your stage clothing from?
Tarja: I have a deal with one dressmaker. She is very professional and knows how to make clothes suitable for Nightwish's music.
9. When will you release your next full-length album? Ever thought about making it a concept-album?
Tuomas: Next album will be released in May-June 2002, single hopefully a month earlier. Concept album is always a challenge, which I've been considering since very beginning of our career. It's still a mystery for me, too.
10. Will the band ever publish music sheets?
Tuomas: I'm glad you asked! Now it's a perfect opportunity to mention that Nightwish DOESN'T PUBLISH music sheets of any kind. We never use notes so please don't ask us for notes anymore There are some tabulatures for guitar in the internet but I don't know how accurate they are.
11. I live in country X, when are you going to play in my hometown?
Tuomas: In the year XX. That means very soon, hopefully.
12. What are your thoughts and feelings regarding Napster, other music-sharing programs, and the distribution of your music over such?
Tuomas: Well, I don't actually have an opinion since I feel quite ignorant about this matter. I think internet is a good way to promote music, like during the release of a new album and such. But you shouldn't be able to download the entire album from the net!! This is something that happened to us before the release of Wishmaster and it definitely cuts the sales and eats our bread.
13. Does the band ever visit fan-pages on the internet? If yes, is there anything special you like or don't like about them?
Tuomas: I check out the official Nightwish-homepage quite often, actually and sometimes also end up in different NW-pages. Nothing bad to say about them, everything's cool with that!
14. Do you read Nightwish.com's discussion board?
Jukka: I do read the topics that sound interesting for me. It's very good form of communication as long as idiots with nothing to say stay away.
Tuomas: Yeah, I check it regularly. Interesting topics every now and then. I've even responded a couple of times to topics that really pissed me off.
15. What is your attitude towards fans who come to you and ask for autographs?
Tuomas: I guess we have always been very fan-friendly band. Of course we all want to keep some kind of privacy, especially just before and after the show, but usually we have time to talk and meet the fans.
16. Tuomas, what do you think when an unknown girl approaches you and gives you a hug? Are you experienced in that?
Tuomas: It's always my pleasure! And quite flattering, too.
17. There are not many Nightwish music videos. Why is that?
Tuomas: It's very hard to get time on the air for a video with this kind of music unless you're something like Metallica. It may be shown a few times in "Jyrki" or MoonTV (Finnish tv-shows) but that's it. Metal and even hard rock is a curseword for MTV. So one might think there's a better way to use the money reserved for promotion... Well, we'll give it a shot with "Over The Hills And Far Away" anyway.
18. What did you think about the Echo-nomination and the result?
Tuomas: Some publicity and an experience. It was great to be nominated even though Guano Apes won the prize. The party itself was boring as hell, though.
19. Tuomas, as the composer of Nightwish's songs, do you write the song for all instruments on your synthesizer? Or does for example Jukka create the drum arrangements on his own?
Tuomas: I create the soul, basic structure, melodies and some riffs of the songs, usually with my keyboards. Sometimes I also use acoustic guitar & piano. (e.g. Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean & Passion And The Opera were mainly written with an acoustic guitar! Even though I can't play it worth shit.) I also use the synth sequencer to create some crappy drum arrangements & ideas but mostly I leave them to Jukka since he can do the job a million times better. The same goes for Emppu and Sami.
20. Tuomas, Hans Zimmer is one of your favorite composers. In your opinion, which movie has the best soundtrack?
Tuomas: I believe it would be "The Gladiator"!! Actually, I think the whole band loves this soundtrack. I also consider Crimson Tide, The Rock & Lion King soundtracks larger than life...
21. Tarja, what do you do to have such a beautiful voice? Did you need a special training? What do you do to "open" your voice before you sing and how long does it take?
Tarja: I have been training my voice for 7 years. In music university I have studied for 5 years, my head instrument has been classical singing. I need to warm up my body and voice before singing every day and normally, if I have a good mood, it takes 15 minutes. It is still depending the day and the mood...
I have many different ways to warm up. I think every singer has their own ways.
22. Guys, during the whole time of being in a band with such a beautiful singer, have you ever felt "something more" between you and her?
Jukka: I guess the only proper answer for me is no because otherwise my girlfriend might get a little bit how should I say it... ANGRY!!!
Tuomas: Something more? Yes, she's definitely more than a friend and more than a co-worker for us. But if you're talking about romantic involvement, I must disappoint you this time
23. On the DVD we can see the band standing in front of a cheering crowd with platinum records. Are there any words to describe what you felt at that moment?
Jukka: There's always some words to say but in this particular situation words just wouldn't be enough... It was great!!!
Tuomas: The feeling was worth making a song about!
24. Tarja, are you still planning to build your singing career without Nightwish?
Tarja: This is the question I face every day. Sometimes it already feels very frustrating to tell all the time the same story, but I think this is the time for me to tell it to you once again.
When Nightwish was born, we started as a project band. I was studying in music university at the time and I wasn't ready to do any concerts with Nightwish at all. After we released our first album "Angels Fall First", many things changed. We did 7 concerts with the first album and soon after I noticed that there are still many things waiting for Nightwish. I needed to leave my studies and it was a very big step for me to do. I have always wanted to become an opera singer and I still want the same. Nowadays I have time to concentrate on my studies and I feel I am much stronger now to make it than I was 4 years ago. The reason for this is Nightwish. I have learned a lot during these 4 years with the band and this has made me see that the most important thing is that I can listen myself and to follow my dreams. I am going to sing with Nightwish as long as it feels good to do. I know that every one of us feels the same. I am not the only member of the band called Nightwish, so sometimes it feels that people can think only me leaving everything behind, but it is not how things are. Every day is a day for joy and Nightwish will live as long as the whole band thinks it is worth to do.
25. I have heard the terrible rumor that Nightwish will do only two more CDs and then break up in the year 2006. Is that true?
Tuomas: I have better ones: Tarja will quit Nightwish very soon because of studying, Sami is a Nazi, Tuomas is a jew, we're all drug addicts and Tarja is married to Ville Valo. Don't believe everything you read or hear!
