Telephone Interview with Anette and Tuomas

[Talking about the Eva-single and the reactions it caused and Peltsi mentions that there's been a request to Teosto because Jukka Reinvuo felt that Eva's chorus was too close to a song he had written.]

[Eva]

Marja: The new Nightwish song, Eva. Anette Olzon here and we a have a connection to a hotell in Helsinki. Ile, take Nightwish under control.

Ile: A very good day from the suite. I usually do interviews only from penthouses. Helsinki lies beneath my eyes. And when you're in a suite preferably with a very beautiful woman. [interviewing Anette in English]
The sentence Ile asks her to read is 'Mikko Peltola on ihana mies' which means 'Mikko Peltola is a lovely man'. (Mikko Peltola, his nickname is Peltsi was the man you heard in the beginning.)

Ile: Tuomas, what did you notice at first in Anette among all the applicants? It's pretty funny that big men are searching for a woman with an application. What was the first thing about Anette that was great?
Tuomas: Of course at first it was the voice. We heard her demo of the song 'Ever Dream' and we'd never met her at that point. That was the first. But then when we met her for the first time it was definetly her.. soulfulness. She goes on her heart instead of her brains. She cries and laughs very easily and is an extremely warmhearted and open person. We got along really well from the first moment.

Ile: What song did you do the first time with Anette?
Tuomas: I'm not sure what it was, we had a training session in Helsinki and we did about six songs from the album 'Once'.

Ile: [talks with Anette and asks a question from Tuomas]
Tuomas: Yes, definetly, probably we'll play some even older stuff in the tour's songlist that we haven't played in a while.

Ile: Coming into a group demands a lot, so how will you change musically now that Anette is an official member of the band?
Tuomas: We're not going to change musically at all, if you listen to the new album, it's pretty traditional NW. The biggest difference there is the female voice, but we don't have to change.

Ile: [talks to Anette]

Ile: Why is the first single a ballad?
Tuomas: That's a good question. I've been thinking whose idea was it originally, but in general raising a song on a pedestal is an extremely ungratefull job towards the whole album and that particular song. The song will be played on the radio until everyone's sick of it and form a hate-love relationship with it no matter how good it is. And it doesn't in my opinion represent the whole album. But you have to pick one and this time it happened to be a ballad. Perhaps because it's the album's easiest song and a single has to be like that. Or so I'm told.

Ile: Today the afternoon papers have dealt Eva in a bit of a weirder light, an investigation request of it has been left to Teosto and Jukka Reinmaa, if I remember the person's name right (he didn't, it's Reinvuo) thought that it's a copy of his song 'Whirlpool'. What do you think about this?
Tuomas: This is the first time I hear about this. So I can't say anything about the matter yet, I'd have to hear this song first, then I can comment. But I have never heard of this guy or the song, so..

Ile: On the other hand, music is done with a limited amount of notes, so it's possible some similarities can be heard.
Tuomas: Yes, surely that has happened before and will in the future and it's not that serious. Intentional plagiarism is a big sin definetly, but accidents happen and you just have to live with it.

Ile: [talks with Anette and asks a question from Tuomas]
Tuomas: We'll go to L.A. in a few days to shoot a couple of music videos, we'll train in the summer and the tour starts in the beginning of October.

Ile: Okey, thank you, Ile from a hotel suite, hopefully the sun will continue shining. I'll stay here and have some lemonade in good company. Bye Peltsi and Marja.
