The unknown Nightwish

Jukka Nevalainen doesn’t play a drum dryer.

NIGHTWISH has got a new vocalist. Describe her with three adjectives.
“Brisk, different, rock.”
Does it annoy you that soon it has been written more about the new vocalist of Nightwish than you even though you are a native in the band?
“Not at all. It’s understandable that the new vocalist will interest more than the drummer who has been in the band for 10 years.”
How often have you had to say “don’t ya know who I am”?
“Not even once. I don’t use that phrase. When I walk at the street, nobody knows me: I’m left alone. One gets one’s rockstar moments at gig places and concerts. It suits me.”
Who is your stylistic master: Lars Ulrich, Remu [Aaltonen from Hurriganes] or Ringo Starr?
“None of those people. Lars Ulrich is the closest but while listening to Metallica I have never analyzed his playing. I've taken a lot of influences from Tommy Lee and the more rock kind of drummers.”
Best way to be after a drumstick in the audience?
“A good question. Year 1996 I was suitably in the first row in a Stratovarius gig when the drummer Jörg Michael threw his drumsticks. It was like in a slow-motion movie. I raised my foot on the stage, pushed up and snatched the drumstick with my left hand. So it’s in the first row, other foot on the stage ready for pushing up.”
You are a father of two children. How to combine rock life with the family?
Rock and family life are so different deep down. Take a wife and mother for your children who understands rock life and knows where to stand with it. Tours will come even though they wouldn’t suit the situation in life. I have been in the delivery of my both children. We have planned and even succeeded in timing the pregnancies and deliveries between tours.”
You naturally know how to use a drum dryer?
“Well. I don’t, yet. We got our first drum dryer only three weeks ago. The lady of the house is the only one who knows how to use it.”
You have investing as a hobby. Give a tip on investements.
“Invest into bond funds and intrests.”
