Wants to make music for movies

The songwriter in the finnsh band Nightwish goes to the movies to listen to the music.

Monday, September the 26. will the finnish symphonic-metal band Noghtwish realease “Highest Hopes – the best of Nightwish. The album sums up their career from their debut Angels Fall First (1997) to the album Once from 2004 which has sold more then 30 00 copies and been at the top of “VG-lista” (Norwegian hitlist) here in Norway.

Norwegian rolemodels

The keyboardist from the small town Kitee on the border to Russia started Nightwish in 1996, because he wanted to make a melodic metal-band with a female singer. The rolemodels were for excample Theatre of Tragey and Immortal. he literally struck gold discovering the classical trained singer tarja turunen The rest is history. Nightwish are huge in their home-country, quite big in Brasil (!) and has all in all sold 2,5 millon albums worldwide.
“I don’t flip the euros anymore. The best thing about making this kind of money is that I have the freedom to work with the things I love. I no longer have to be a substitute-teacher on the local Kitee-school”, Tuomas says.
The songwriter explaines the bands sucess with mentioning the sudden trend of goth-inspired bands with female singers, for excample Evanesence.
“And it doesn’t hurt to have a beautyful woman that can sing either”, he laughs.

Closes his eyes in the cinema

On the bands website three of the five members mentions that their favourite-album is the Gladiator-soundtrack – quite a strange thing coming from a bunch of longhaired metalheads perhaps?
“The others have propably been quite influenced by me. In my opinion the composer Hans Zimmer is uncapable of failing. I’m not the kind of guy that allows myself to be dictated by genres. I’m thinking about the good melody”, Tuomas says.
He tells us that he’s the kind of guy that goes to the movie to listen to the music, and enjoys sitting there with his eyes closed.
“I dream of working with film-music in the future.”

Who would you like to work with?
“Tim Burton. He hasn’t made one single bad movie. I would love it if Johnny Depp had the leading role.
